The Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge, now in its second season, has a simple aim: find the fastest and most suitable racer to fill a race seat in a Daytona Prototype at the annual Rolex 24 At Daytona®.
Won in 2009 by Radical UK Cup champ Derek Johnston, who raced in the Rolex 24 in January this year, the competion this season is set to be tougher than before. The dream came true for Derek, and it will for another driver, not through luck, but sheer talent.
Racers in the Cooper Tires British F3 International Series, the Avon Tyres British GT Championship, the Radical UK Cup and the SPEED Sports Prototype series will compete for the chance to win this prestigious prize and and to race with and against the leading US endurance racing drivers.
Cooper Tires British F3 International Series:
Almost a university for budding Formula One drivers, it is contested over 20 x 30 minutes sprint races mainly in the UK, but with three flyaway races at Spa, Nurburgring and Algarve. Extremely difficult to dominate with very small differences between cars, teams and drivers in terms of speed and skill. Most of the cars have Dallara chassis and are powered by either Mercedes, VW or Neil Brown Engineering Honda engines. At the end of the season each driver will have raced for 10 hours plus numerous test and qualifying sessions.
Avon Tyres British GT Championship:
Contested over six double-race weekends (one-hour races) and two race weekends with a longer two-hour race. Mainly run in the UK with the exception of a race weekend at Spa-Francorchamps, the British GT Championship is not open to a pairing of professional drivers so the team must choose two B-class drivers or one A- and one C-class pairing. Popular cars are Ferraris, Dodge Vipers, Aston Martins, Moslers and Ascaris. When the season is over, a driver has averaged around eight hours racing.
Radical UK Cup:
Consists of Radical SR8 powered by a Powertech 2.8-litre V8 engine and Radical SR3 with a 1500cc bike engine. The SR8s are around four seconds a lap faster so unless it is raining these are the cars to be in. Many says that if you can master a Radical SR8 then you can drive anything thanks to its power to weight ratio and lack of down force compared to cars of similar speed. As with British GT the Radical UK Cup consists of two drivers per car and is contested over 8 weekends of which six are double headers and two are longer 75-minute races resulting of an average of a total of 5.25 hours per driver.
SPEED:
The SPEED sports prototype series consists of FIA CN cars powered by the Honda VTEC engine and built to CN regulations. These cars are very much like a "baby" LMP2 car with lots of aero. They all have paddelshift sequential gearboxes. SPEED is also a two-driver-per-car formula. There are six race meetings scheduled for 2010 the total average of racing per driver is nine hours contested over five three-hour and one six-hour race weekends.
