The Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge is a driver challenge between Sunoco-fuelled series in Europe.

Registered drivers in the Cooper Tires British F3 International, the Avon Tyres British GT Championship, the Radical UK Cup and in the SPEED sports prototype series go head-to-head against each other throughout the year collecting points for race position, fastest lap and pole position. The prize, possibly the largest in UK motorsport, is a race seat with a top-flight team running a Daytona Prototype in the Rolex 24.

It gives the driver the chance, of course, of being in the winning team and bringing home the legendary black-faced Rolex Daytona watch.

In 2009, the highest points scorer, Derek Johnston, won the coveted seat for the 2010 Rolex 24 At Daytona with famed Doran Racing and was set to race against some of the best drivers in motorsport.

As well as becoming Sunoco Daytona Challenge champ, Derek also became the ambassador for GRAND-AM and Sunoco in Europe. An ardent supporter of the Sunoco Daytona Challenge, he fits the role well.

The 2010 Rolex 24 was on January 30th-31st 2010, and although Derek had won the Sunoco Daytona Challenge, he still needed to ramp up his already impressive skills. To do this, he took part in four test flights; one at Virginia International Raceway and three at Daytona International Speedway (DIS), the home of the Rolex 24.

Derek and Doran Racing came, after a superb start in the wet with ace driver Memo Gidley at the wheel and mechanical problems during the race, in at a very creditable 10th in class.

The 2011 Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge is provided by DIS, supported by GRAND-AM and Sunoco, sponsored by Virgin Atlantic and Hilton Hotels and promoted by Anglo American Oil Company Ltd.

Scores of Derek's family, friends and fans made the journey to sunny Florida to watch him compete in January. Packages for the 2011 Rolex 24 At Daytona®, organised in conjunction with Travel Destinations, will be soon be announced. It was quite a spectacle, and is set to become one of the highlights of any motorsport fan's year.
