Derek Johnston 2010 Challenge Winner!
From the beginning of the challenge in 2009 it was difficult to tell who was likely to be the eventual winner. The four pace setters were Alan Simosen from British GT, rising star Daniel Riciardo from British F3, Rob Garofell in the Speed Series and Derek Johnston from the Radical UK Cup.
Derek had a tremendous final race weekend at Snetterton, winning both races and putting himself ahead with an average 77.50 points. He also secured the Radical UK Cup both in class and outright for the second year running. All that remained for him was to travel to Dijon on October 10th/11th and hope to secure the Radical European Masters title outright. The class win was already his.
By coincidence October 10th was also the date of the last round of SPEED Series and on paper Rob Garofall had the relatively simple task of finishing 2nd in his last race to win the challenge. His position was helped further when he set pole position. In the race, however, unexpected reliability problems dropped him out of contention completely and down to 4th place in the challenge with an average of 69 points. This meant that Derek Johnston became the first ever winner of the Sunoco Rolex 24 At Daytona Challenge.
