Fumes from outboard engiens typically exhausts into the water. Normal unleaded fuel contains benzene, sulphur and aromatics (solvents like toluene, xylene etc) and MTBE. MTBE has been found to contaminate waterways and is not biodegradable. Aspen 4T alkylate petrol is free of sulphur, benzene and aromatics and is therefore the recommended choice especially in sensitive waterways.

If you are running a 2-stroke outboard engine you should use a two-stroke oil that is totally biodegradable.

University tests have found that a new 4-stroke outboard engine using premium unleaded petrol polutes the water more than a 2-stroke outboarder using Aspen 4T alkylate petrol and Aspen's Marine outboard oil.
