This weekend saw the eighth round of the British Superbikes at Brands Hatch, and we decided to catch up with Sunoco British 125GP championship leader Rob Guiver from SP125/Brookhouse Garage Racing. The 125GP qualifying was held on the Saturday and is made up of two sessions which then get combined to make a combined classification. The race was held on Sunday before the British Superbikes second race of the weekend. “Qualifying went really well, I got P3 just behind Wayne Ryan,” Rob explained, “I am 10 kgs heavier than everyone else which is a bit of a disadvantage but I was pleased with third!” Guiver is slightly older than most 125 riders; he was 17 when he started racing in the National Superstock, “I went into Superstock from the 125’s at 17 but unfortunately the funds just weren’t there anymore and I took some time out. Lucky for me one of my friends in the 125 stopped competing so I could take his bike and get back into the sport I love.” The Sunoco 125GP race saw a real race to the finish line with the top three constantly changing. Eventually Kyle Ryde and Wayne Ryan got the better of Guiver down the Brabham straight and Ryde took the win ahead of Ryan with Guiver taking the chequered flag in third. Guiver explained his simple race strategy: “I just kept my head down and concentrated on getting through the turns, then just went for it as much as I could down the straights!” With four rounds left the championship the championship remains wide open but Guiver remains confident. “I’m really looking forward to the Cadwell and Donington rounds. Cadwell is perfect and really suits me so fingers crossed for a successful round and maybe even a win.” “The Silverstone penultimate round will be tough due to the wide straights, as I do better on the circuits with more turns.” After this weekend Rob remains on top in the championship with 127 points ahead of Wayne Ryan on 111 points and Kyle Ryde in third on 100. With the top 3 so tight on points the championship title really is all to play for, the next round is at Cadwell Park over the August bank holiday weekend – follow us on Twitter @Sunoco_UK for updates. |
