April 1st, 2010: A scourge has, for years, afflicted the UK’s forestry and agricultural workers, users of petrol-engined garden equipment and motorboat owners: benzene addiction.
Obnoxiously sweet-smelling, benzene, a toxic additive found in pump fuel, is a known carcinogen.
In low doses it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, rapid heart rate, headaches, tremors, confusion, and unconsciousness. It can damage bone marrow, targets the liver, kidneys, lungs, the heart and the brain.
It can also cause excessive bleeding and depress the immune system, increasing the chance of infection. Benzene causes leukaemia and is associated with other blood cancers and pre-cancers of the blood.
Yet still people use it although is a social, and indeed, environmental embarrassment.
Few support groups exist to help in the same way that aid is given to smokers, drinkers, gamblers of drug abusers. When, for example, was the last time you read of a BA (Benzene Anonymous) meeting?
That’s right. Never. Benzene users are the forgotten ones, the people who have no voice, the silent tree surgeons, farm workers and sit-and-ride lawnmower owners. Until now.
A trio of recreational and professional former-benzene users decided that enough was enough. Hilda Andersbrand, Wally Jonthall and John Andrewson ploughed their collective experience into creating BenzeneKwit, a transdermal patch to be worn by benzene abusers to wean them off this self-induced health hazard.
The application of BenzeneKwit, which has the catchy slogan of A Serious Problem Easily Neutralised (or ASPEN for short) is simple. Wear the patch on one’s arm each day until the effects of benzene diminishes.
Users also report excellent results by adopting alkylate petrol, a green, environmentally-friendly fuel manufactured under a variety of names, with Aspen alkylate petrol being the best known.
With help and good, environmentally-sound alternatives, the plague that is benzene can be eradicated. If you see an arboralist, farmer, gardener or anyone who uses a 2-stroke or 4-stroke petrol engine with the tell-tale wheezing and rheumy eyes of benzene addiction, please don’t condemn them.
Instead, recommend BenzeneKwit – in the form of Aspen alkylate petrol – as the way to a better life.
