A cleaner fuel for portable stoves that doesn’t cost the earth – or a fortune

It is an irony that when many people get back to nature, they can damage it – and possibly their health – as they admire it.

Aspen, a fuel from Sweden, is not a naphtha, as some camping fuels are, but is an alkylate petrol.

An alkylate petrol – often referred to as “...the purest extractable petroleum product” – is made by the alkylation process using surplus gases from the crude oil distillation and cracking plant being mixed. This creates an alkylate liquid.

Aspen alkylate petrol is adapted to give the least possible environmental impact. A very clean fuel, it contains around ten substances; other petrols may contain hundreds.

Aspen alkylate petrol is more or less free from dangerous component parts such as benzene, aromatic hydrocarbons, sulphur and cracked components. As a result, Aspen produces significantly lower air emissions than normal petrol while burning just as efficiently.

For portable stoves and lanterns, this results in greater comfort for users, especially when cooking. The headaches, nausea, skin and eye irritation and respiratory discomfort experienced by users of other fuels tend not to occur.

It is better for the environment, too. With fewer emissions produced, fewer pollutants can damage sensitive sites.

Equipment also benefits. Aspen alkylate petrol is a purer petrol, therefore the stove or lantern is kept cleaner with less soot and deposits, which ensure its high performance.

In addition, this fuel can also be stored – up to five years – without suffering deterioration in quality. Normal petrol decomposes if stored in containers or petrol tanks, which gives rise to operational problems. With Aspen alkylate petrol, a stove or lantern is easy to light after winter or summer storage.
